Child abuse is down in West Virginia, but anti-child abuse advocates say increased funding would give more resources to law enforcement and child advocates.
Legislators, community leaders, and activists met today for the annual Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia Legislative Breakfast. The theme for the event was “The #1 Question: Is It Good for Children.”
Prevent Child Abuse West Virginia is asking for a $1.1 million investment in anti-child abuse initiatives by the state Legislature. If implemented this investment would cost $2.85 per child.
The organization seeks a $300,000 increase in in-home family education. The group seeks the return of $300,000 in funding to the state Children’s Trust Fund with a $300,000 increase, and $200,000 for evidence-based prevention education. The $600,000 for the Children’s Trust Fund would expand the Partners in Prevention program into more counties.
Since 2005 child abuse in West Virginia dropped by 39 percent, from 8,158 to 4,978 in 2009.
“We are pleased that child abuse is on the decline,” said Jim McKay, program director for Prevent Child Abuse WV. “We know prevention programs work, but we need to do even more to expand successful programs so that every child in West Virginia can grow up free from abuse and neglect.”
Increased funding will secure $10.5 million in federal funding for anti-child abuse education. Currently 13 counties are without anti-child abuse programs.
